Hampire by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, is a great piece for children to pick up. It demystifies the dark, and turns fear on its head to tickle your funny bone. Illustrated by Howard Fine, this book gives children the lighthearted humour needed to fight against what they fear when night falls.
Chicken, Horse, Duck and other animals on a farm tremble at the thought of a huge hog who ‘haunts’ the grounds at night. They feed each other scary stories and huddle in a horrid mess. Known as the Hampire, the hog leaves a bright red, gooey liquid in its path. Eventually the terrified friends on the farm come to realise that he is in fact a friendly pig who loves strawberry jam and rummages the farmer’s fridge each night for supper.
Sometimes humour can disarm horror try this read with your kid.
