Digital Storytelling for Dads and Kids 1

What in the world is digital storytelling?

Are your kids too engaged in their computer games and phone apps? Don’t fret, you can still get their attention using what they naturally enjoy – technology.

Here’s a fun and meaningful thing for you to do together – digital storytelling. Very simply, it’s making and telling stories using digital media and we’ve written a series of Digistory posts to help you along your way.

Here’s an overview of the process:
1. Choose a topic that clicks with them. It could be about their favorite things or activities, a trip you made together, a dream they have, or it could be about their heroes.
2. Write it down. This is called story boarding.
3. Read and record your script. Add background music if needed. This is known as record a “voice over”.
4. Pick your images and edit your video. Find appropriate images (still photos, illustrations, or video clips) for your story.

Mix and edit your audio (voice-over and music) and images to finally produce a one-two minute video.

Get your popcorn and showcase your video at home or share it with relatives and friends online.

Your kids will be empowered to express themselves and grow their creativity over  a great sharing and bonding opportunity. It can be done at home, one on one or as a group activity.

We’ll be releasing our Digistory DIY posts over the next week so look out for them: Overview – Writing Your Story – Images and Story Boarding – Pulling it Together (Audacity / MovieMaker).
