Kodu – Web Applications for Dads and Kids

Kodu Game Lab Microsoft Research FUSE LabsJust imagine working together with your child to turn his favourite story into a fun game. With Kodu, nearly every one regardless of age can be a computer game programmer!

Kodu is a new visual programming language designed for creating games that is easy enough for children as young as eight to try. All you need is a PC with a keyboard and mouse.

Here’s how to get started.

  1. Download and install Kodu and get familiar with the interface by trying it out. Click to create a new world, add characters and program objects to move.
  2. Start thinking of how you’d like the game to be like. Guide your child to write a rich story beset with characters who live and work in a unique environment, and with a problem that can be solved such as jumping really high to reach a resource.
  3. Now, the programming can begin. Create a new world, and add designs to turn it into the environment that your child had visualized. Add the characters and challenges that they’ll need to overcome.

Your kids will be acquiring new skills whilst having fun with you, all at the same time!

Editor’s Note: This application will work only on the following operating systems – Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista, Windows XP. Other system requirements include a graphics card that supports DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 2.0 or higher is required. .NET Framework 3.5 or higher is required.
